Western Australia is continuing to build momentum in its clean energy transition, with major federal approvals for renewable generation and battery storage, significant new grid investment plans, and updated rooftop solar regulations now officially in effect. These developments are helping strengthen the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) as ageing coal-fired generation gradually retires.
Federal Government Backs 10 Major Renewable and Battery Projects
The Australian Government has announced successful tenders under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), supporting ten new renewable generation and battery storage projects across regional Western Australia. The projects will deliver substantial new clean energy capacity while improving reliability and supporting growing electricity demand throughout the state.
- Projects will deliver approximately 1.886 GW of new renewable electricity generation from large-scale wind and solar developments.
- More than 3.683 GWh of standalone battery storage capacity will be added to improve grid stability and support peak electricity demand periods.
WA Unveils $1.4 Billion Clean Energy Fund for Grid Expansion
The Western Australian government has announced a major Clean Energy Fund designed to accelerate transmission upgrades, renewable integration, and network expansion across the South West Interconnected System. The investment aims to improve long-term reliability while supporting the rapid growth of renewable energy projects.
- Approximately AU$1.4 billion (US$1 billion) will be invested into clean energy infrastructure and electricity network upgrades.
- The funding focuses on enabling additional renewable generation, battery storage integration, and replacing retiring coal-fired capacity across the state.
New Solar and Battery Connection Rules Now Active on the SWIS
Updated technical requirements for new and upgraded rooftop solar and battery systems officially came into effect on 1 May 2026. The revised rules are intended to provide greater installation flexibility while improving grid management capabilities during periods of high solar exports and network stress.
- The changes introduce “whole of site compliance” along with a combined inverter capacity limit of 30 kVA per property.
- New coordination processes between installers, retailers, and Western Power are expected to improve system reliability and streamline renewable integration.
Renewables Continue Strong Performance in WA
Recent electricity market data shows renewable energy sources such as wind and solar continuing to supply an increasing share of Western Australia’s electricity demand. The latest figures highlight the growing role of clean energy and storage technologies in supporting grid reliability.
- Renewable penetration across the SWIS reached approximately 46% during the first quarter of 2026.
- Large-scale batteries and hybrid renewable systems are increasingly supporting system stability as renewable generation expands.
Western Australia’s energy transition continues to accelerate through strong investment, modern grid planning, and growing renewable deployment across both utility-scale and household systems. With new infrastructure, storage technologies, and policy support now moving forward together, the state is positioning itself for a cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy future.
