Western Australia continues demonstrating strong momentum in renewable energy, battery storage, and grid modernisation across the state. Over the past 48 hours, major milestones in large-scale batteries, Indigenous-led renewable projects, and long-term emissions planning have highlighted both the rapid progress and future challenges shaping WA’s energy transition.
Big Batteries Hit Record 37.2% of Peak Demand in WA’s Main Grid
Utility-scale battery storage systems operating within Western Australia’s South West Interconnected System (SWIS) achieved a major milestone over the weekend, supplying more than one-third of peak electricity demand during Saturday evening conditions.
- Grid-scale batteries supplied a record 37.2% of peak electricity demand, excluding additional behind-the-meter household battery systems.
- Renewable energy sources provided approximately 78% of daytime electricity supply and 53% across the full weekend period.
- The result highlights the growing role of major battery assets including the Collie Battery Energy Storage System in supporting grid reliability and renewable integration.
Woodside-Commissioned Report Warns WA Unlikely to Meet 2050 Net-Zero Target
A new Deloitte modelling report commissioned by Woodside Energy suggests Western Australia is currently not on track to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 under existing renewable deployment rates and infrastructure development timelines.
- The analysis states renewable energy deployment would need to accelerate to approximately 11 times historical build rates for WA to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
- Even deployment rates five times higher than historical averages would reportedly only reduce emissions by around 50% by mid-century.
- The report argues that solar, wind, and battery projects must be developed at unprecedented sustained rates regardless of future gas expansion decisions.
Indigenous-Led Jinbi Solar Project Reaches Financial Close in Pilbara
The Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation (YEC), one of Australia’s largest Indigenous-led renewable energy organisations, has reached financial close on the Jinbi Solar Project while also signing a long-term power purchase agreement with Rio Tinto.
- Stage 1 of the project will include a 75 MWac solar facility with future expansion potential to 150 MWac alongside possible battery energy storage integration.
- The development represents a significant milestone for Aboriginal-led renewable energy investment and clean energy participation in Western Australia.
- Construction activities have commenced following financial close, with DT Infrastructure leading project delivery works.
Western Australia’s energy sector continues advancing through large-scale batteries, renewable infrastructure expansion, and growing Indigenous participation in clean energy development. While long-term emissions targets remain challenging, the rapid growth of storage systems, wind, and solar projects demonstrates that the foundations for a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient electricity system are steadily taking shape across the state.
