Western Australia continues to lead with bold steps in its energy transition. Over the past 48 hours, the state government has unveiled a major funding package designed to expand the grid, integrate more renewables, and deliver cleaner, more affordable power across the South West and regional areas.
WA Government Launches $1.4 Billion Clean Energy Fund
The Cook Labor Government has announced a $1.4 billion Clean Energy Fund that will be detailed in the upcoming 2026–27 State Budget. This initiative aims to decarbonise the economy while ensuring households and businesses in the South West have access to reliable, affordable clean energy.
- The fund will support a slate of critical grid and renewable projects to help WA capitalise on its abundant wind and solar resources.
- It forms part of a broader vision to maintain the state’s position as Australia’s strongest economy through secure clean energy supply.
Clean Energy Link – East Grid Expansion Declared Priority Project
A flagship component of the new fund is Clean Energy Link – East, which has been declared a priority project under the State Development Act 2025. This major expansion of the South West Interconnected System will connect new wind and solar generation east of Collie.
- The project is expected to deliver enough energy to power around one million homes and support industrial growth with cheaper, cleaner electricity.
- It is forecast to come online by the end of 2029 and create approximately 800 local jobs during construction alongside related projects.
Horizon Power Gains Funding for Regional Renewable Transition
Part of the Clean Energy Fund includes dedicated support for Horizon Power to accelerate renewable energy projects in regional Western Australia. The investment targets key locations to improve energy security and reduce reliance on traditional sources.
- $7 million has been allocated to advance initiatives in the West Kimberley, Coral Bay, Hopetoun, Denham, and the Pilbara.
- These projects will help integrate more renewables into isolated grids, delivering cleaner power to remote communities and supporting the state’s overall decarbonisation goals.
Smart Grid Modernisation and Complementary Transmission Projects Advance
The Clean Energy Fund will drive smart grid technologies and support related transmission projects including Clean Energy Link – North and Clean Energy Link – Kwinana. These efforts focus on modernising infrastructure to handle growing renewable generation and demand.
- CEL – North is already under construction and on track for completion in late 2027, improving renewable transfer between Malaga and Three Springs.
- CEL – Kwinana will support up to 900 MW of new energy demand in the Western Trade Coast through new terminals and transmission lines.
These forward-looking investments demonstrate Western Australia’s strong commitment to a cleaner, more resilient energy future. With innovation in batteries, grid technology, and renewables at the forefront, the state is well-positioned to create jobs, support industry growth, and deliver sustainable power for generations to come.
