Western Australia continues accelerating its clean energy transition, with major federal and state initiatives driving new investment into renewable generation, battery storage, and electricity infrastructure. Over the past 48 hours, several landmark announcements have reinforced the state’s growing momentum toward a cleaner and more resilient power system.
Major Federal Contracts Awarded for 1.9 GW Renewables and 3.7 GWh Battery Storage
The Australian Government has announced the successful projects under Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tenders 5 and 6 for Western Australia, selecting ten projects that will add significant renewable generation and battery storage capacity to the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM).
- Approximately 1.886 GW of renewable generation capacity and 3.683 GWh of battery storage have been awarded across the selected projects.
- The developments are expected to provide renewable electricity for more than one million homes while creating over 7,000 construction jobs and around 500 long-term operational roles.
WA Government Backs Major Grid Expansion with $1 Billion Clean Energy Fund
The Western Australian government is progressing a major funding package aimed at strengthening the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) and supporting higher levels of renewable integration across the network.
- Approximately US$1 billion has been allocated through the state’s Clean Energy Fund, with further details expected in the 2026–2027 state budget.
- The investment will support new transmission infrastructure required to connect additional wind, solar, and battery projects reliably to the grid.
Renewables Reach 46% of WA Generation as Batteries Reshape the Grid
New quarterly market data highlights the growing role of renewable energy and battery storage across Western Australia’s isolated electricity system, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
- The renewable energy share in the WEM increased to 46% during Q1 2026, while coal generation declined by approximately 18% year-on-year.
- Grid-scale battery systems are now regularly supplying more than 20% of electricity during key demand periods, helping stabilise the grid and reduce wholesale electricity prices.
Synergy Advances 2 GW Hybrid Renewable Project
State-owned utility Synergy has secured environmental approvals for a major combined wind, solar, and battery storage development in Western Australia as part of broader efforts to replace retiring thermal generation.
- The proposed project could eventually include up to 2 GW of combined wind, solar PV, and battery energy storage capacity.
- The development forms part of Western Australia’s wider strategy to expand clean energy infrastructure and strengthen long-term electricity reliability.
Western Australia’s energy transition continues gaining momentum through major renewable investment, large-scale battery deployment, and strategic grid expansion. With wind, solar, and storage technologies increasingly working together across the state, WA is positioning itself as a national leader in reliable, low-emissions energy systems and clean technology innovation.
